June is Gay Pride Month, and It’s Not Just About Parades

As a gay man born and raised in Napa, I know the importance of Pride first hand. Pride month allows us to celebrate LGBTQ+ history and culture and to recommit to the work that still needs to be done to establish full justice and equality for all. For many LGBTQ+ people, it might not be feasible or safe to come out and be visible. The past year has been incredibly difficult for many in my community, especially mental health, and many act on this with suicide. According to the Trevor Project: “A little social support can have a profound effect on the life of an LGBTQ+ young person. We know that just ONE accepting adult can reduce the risk of suicide by 40 percent.”

So, in addition to the Pride events being held in Napa County, the Rainbow Action Network will install Rainbow Little Libraries throughout Napa County. They will be distributing 500 diverse and bilingual children’s books and building 10 new Rainbow Little Libraries. Education and acceptance are key. I knew at a young age who I was and how I felt. This was not a choice. This is who I was born as. Support and education are vital to all you people, as well as those in the LGBTQ+ community. Check out the Trevor Project and Rainbow Action Network.

Be sure to check out all the events happening in Napa Valley for Pride this month of June.
