Two Opportunities to Save Water

Master Gardeners classes

UC Master Gardeners of Napa County present two online presentations and discussions this week:

Thursday, Oct. 7 from 7 to 8 p.m.: Napa Library Talk, “Replace Your Grass, Save Water & Get Cash.” Learn how to replace your thirsty lawn without digging it up. They will discuss how to use sheet mulching to replace your lawn and create rich soil for replanting and how to participate in the City of Napa Cash for Grass program. Register to receive the Zoom link at ucanr.edu.

Sunday, Oct. 10, from 3 to 4 p.m.: Join Master Gardeners at the monthly Food Growing Forum, held the second Sunday of each month through November. They discuss seasonal vegetable and food growing topics and answer questions.

The subject on Oct. 10 is perennial vegetables, garlic, and alliums; on Nov. 14, it is cane berries. Register at ucanr.edu.

Native plant sale at Skyline Park

The California Native Plant Society (CNPS) has scheduled its next plant sale for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 9 and 10 at Skyline Park. Fall is the perfect time to enhance water-wise gardens and restore your landscape with drought-tolerant plants. You can still create an attractive garden in the face of drought and the need to conserve water, but it requires a change in focus in plant choices. Planting drought-tolerant native plants will save water over the years to come and restore habitat lost in the fires and the drought for native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects and small mammals. Losing your lawn doesn’t mean you have to settle for a moonscape of rocks and concrete. More than 1,000 hard-to-find native plants in 125 species for shade or sun will be for sale and ready for planting in your garden and pots on a deck or patio. ·

Experts will be on hand to answer questions and to help with plant selection.

The adjacent Martha Walker California Native Habitat Garden, maintained by the Napa Chapter, will be open for visitors to see the native plants in a landscape setting.

For more information, visit www.napavalleycnps.org.

Admission to Skyline Park is free during the sale and show. Skyline Park, 2201 Imola Ave., Napa
