The City of Napa Has a New Sister (City)

The City of Napa announced a new sister city partnership this past week with Montalcino, Italy.

“Napa and Montalcino are both esteemed wine country destinations surrounded by natural beauty and offering farm-to-table restaurants, winery tasting rooms, and shops, all within walking distance, making the sisterhood is a natural fit,” said Napa Mayor Scott Sedgley.

If you’re wondering what a sister city technically is, “A sister city, county, or state relationship is a broad-based, long-term partnership between two communities in two countries. A relationship is officially recognized after the highest elected or appointed official from both communities sign off on an agreement to become sister cities.” according to sistercities.org.

Napa and Montalcino hope to foster fruitful relationships between their cities and government to help provide education, establish connections, and promote economic growth for both world-class wine regions.

An excellent example of how sister cities can support each other was the Project Kiks fundraiser by the Kiwanis Club earlier this year, in which Yountville donated shoes to its sister city, Todos Santos, Mexico. Our former Mayor, Cindy Saucerman, has a home there, and it is an amazing little community with artists and restaurants. A perfect compliment and connection to Yountville.
