The Dreams & Hopes of a Poet Laureate

Napa County Poet Laureate Marianne Lyon will be participating in another upcoming event hosted by the Napa Valley Writers this Wednesday, April 14th, to discuss “The Dreams and Hopes of a Poet Laureate.”  Lyon was a vocal music teacher for 43 years. She taught in Minneapolis, Brussels, Belgium, NVUSD, and Hong Kong, then returned to Napa Valley to write poetry. She has 240 poems published in literary magazines, journals, and reviews, including Ravens Perch, Leaping Clear, Slippery Elm, and Black Fork Review. During this talk, Lyon outlines her dreams and hopes for poets and aspiring poets. She believes poetry is a joyous journey and a healing outlet, especially during pandemic times. This talk is for writers of all ages, as Lyon plans to celebrate local authors while fostering children and teens’ opportunities in discovering their poetic-soul voices. You will hear poems from Napa Valley Writers members, and Lyon will answer questions about how to be involved with the local writing community. The talk will be via Zoom from 7 pm to 9 pm. The cost is $5, free for students with ID.

Last Sunday, April 11th, Lyon hosted the event “Picture to Poem” at the Yountville Community Center.

Taking inspiration from Photographer Quinn Saine’s “Flow” exhibit, enjoy the collection of verses put together by all those who participated:

Dance with me into the Mystic
Upwelling blue waves
Swimming tides of now
Sunrise splashes color
Peach in sky above
Each morning divine
I am only one in an ocean of color
Perfect wave on the way
Gentle crests roll ashore
The gift moves on   never done
Solitude    Peace   Tranquility
A haven of self-love
